Outstanding Free Event!
All Long Island Students Welcome - Reservations Needed
Thursday, November 19, 2009, 7:00 p.m., Lupton 250
See PHPA Events below for details
Pre Health Professions Advisement, or PHPA, serves matriculated and non-matriculated students who are planning to attend Medical School, Dental School, Veterinary School, or other post-graduate programs in the health professions. PHPA can offer guidance for the prerequisite courses, examinations, letters of recommendation, and personal essays that will be needed as part of an effective application for advanced studies in the health professions. Those with only a high school degree please see note **
The Certificate in Sciences for the Health Professions provides the advantages of matriculation to post-baccalaureate students taking needed science and mathematics courses. More information and brochure
Matriculated students in degree programs should follow the guidance of their regular department advisor for their undergraduate degree requirements. However, achieving specific prerequisites for a graduate application, may require some alternate course choices.
All Transfer Students, in certificate and other programs, should be sure their transfer credits appear on their Farmingdale transcripts when they matriculate. Those with the most total credits register first each semester. This can be important to obtaining a seat in a high-demand course.

PHY 143 & PHY144 - General Physics I & II (Calculus) both will be offered in spring 2010. (PHY143: M-W 8:00-9:15 am & Th 8:00-10:45 am / PHY144: T-Th 8:00-9:15 am & W 8:00-10:45 am) While calculus-based problems do not appear on the MCAT and other programs may not require calculus-based physics, this course represents a significantly stronger preparation for the exam and for all other science areas than does College Physics. I recommend it for all capable students of science and other disciplines who want the strongest possible preparation. Note that the recommended prerequisite for this course is now MTH150. MTH130 will still be accepted for those who have already taken it. Also, MTH151 is recommended concurrently with PHY144.

CALL FOR INTEREST: There is a possibility of scheduling a group trip to NY Medical College in Valhalla, or to other medical, dental, or health professions schools within a day-trip distance. If there is enough interest among those who qualify for CSTEP funding, (see the link in the left column) we can apply to that program for funding to support all participants on the entire trip. Please let me know if you are interested in having me work on this and which schools would be of interest.

** Note
|
Students who are seeking extra courses to qualify to apply for admission to a Farmingdale undergraduate degree program should consult with the Admissions office and their intended undergraduate department rather than this program.
The certificate in Health Studies is designed to meet the needs of students who need science courses to qualify for admission to associate or baccalaureate programs such as Nursing, Dental Hygiene or Medical Laboratory Technology. It is not suitable as a Pre Health Professions major. For the Health Studies certificate program, please contact Professor Dolores Bradley in the Nursing Department at 631-420-2265
Those who are undecided about their choice of major, may wish to consider applying to the Undeclared Major program, which permits deferring the decision of a major for one year while taking key courses.
