PHPA
|
Pre Health Professions Advisement, or PHPA, serves matriculated and non-matriculated students who are planning to attend Medical School, Dental School, Veterinary School, or other post-graduate programs in the health professions. PHPA can offer guidance for the prerequisite courses, examinations, letters of recommendation, and personal essays that will be needed as part of an effective application for advanced studies in the health professions. Those with only a high school degree please see note **
The Certificate in Sciences for the Health Professions provides the advantages of matriculation to post-baccalaureate students taking needed science and mathematics courses. More information and brochure
Matriculated students in degree programs should follow the guidance of their regular department advisor for their undergraduate degree requirements. However, achieving specific prerequisites for a graduate application, may require some alternate course choices.
All Transfer Students, in certificate and other programs, should be sure their transfer credits appear on their Farmingdale transcripts when they matriculate. Those with the most total credits register first each semester. This can be important to obtaining a seat in a high-demand course.

PHY 143 & PHY144 - General Physics I & II (Calculus) - PHY143 will be offered in the fall of 2010. These courses are being offered especially to meet the needs of premed, pre-dental, and science/technology students who want the strongest possible physics course in their records.
While calculus-based problems do not appear on the MCAT and many programs may not require calculus-based physics, these courses represent a significantly stronger preparation for the exam and for all other science areas than does College Physics. I recommend them for all capable students of science and other disciplines who want the strongest possible preparation. The prerequisite for PHY143 is MTH130. However MTH150 is recommended as a stronger alternative. Also, MTH151 or MTH236 is recommended concurrently with PHY144.
Note that you should take General Physics only if you think you can maintain a good grade in this course which is more challenging than College Physics in its mathematics content and in the Physics problems which will be solved.
Fall 2010 Schedule:
PHY143: T-Th 8:00-9:15 am & W 8:00-10:50 am

A Campus Ban on Smoking was recommended to the President by the Faculty/Staff Governance Body on April 16, 2010.
Students, you should act too! Please, in clubs and the Student Government Association, pass the same resolution:
| Smoking shall be prohibited on the entire Farmingdale State College campus including, but not limited to, buildings, grounds, green spaces, gardens, athletic facilities, and parking lots. |
Farmingdale, with its large commitment to health sciences, should Join the nearly 400 other campuses in the US that have banned smoking. It is legal, justified, and the morally responsible thing to do.

I urge that we consider the University at Buffalo, non-punitive implementation model.

** Note
|
Students who are seeking extra courses to qualify to apply for admission to a Farmingdale undergraduate degree program should consult with the Admissions office and their intended undergraduate department rather than this program.
The certificate in Health Studies is designed to meet the needs of students who need science courses to qualify for admission to associate or baccalaureate programs such as Nursing, Dental Hygiene or Medical Laboratory Technology. It is not suitable as a Pre Health Professions major. For the Health Studies certificate program, please contact Professor Dolores Bradley in the Nursing Department at 631-420-2265
Those who are undecided about their choice of major, may wish to consider applying to the Undeclared Major program, which permits deferring the decision of a major for one year while taking key courses.
